Understanding cryptocurrency prices

Cryptocurrency prices are not set by any central authority — they emerge from continuous trading across hundreds of exchanges worldwide. The prices shown above are volume-weighted averages aggregated from 30+ major exchanges and updated every 60 seconds. This methodology gives a more accurate picture of the real market price than any single exchange's quote.

Unlike stock markets that close on evenings and weekends, crypto markets operate continuously. Price discovery is global and instant — a major news event in the US at 2am affects prices just as immediately as one during peak trading hours.

Key metrics explained

Price (USD)
The current value of one unit of the coin in US dollars, based on the volume-weighted average across major exchanges. Updates every 60 seconds.
24h Change %
The percentage change in price compared to exactly 24 hours ago. Positive = higher now. Negative = lower. Note that intraday swings can be much larger than the 24h figure.
Market Cap
Price × circulating supply. The total value of all coins in circulation. Market cap is a better measure of a coin's size than price alone — a $0.001 coin with 1 trillion supply has a larger market cap than a $1,000 coin with 1,000 supply.
24h Volume
The total USD value of trades executed in the past 24 hours across all tracked exchanges. High volume relative to market cap indicates active trading and typically tighter spreads.

What moves cryptocurrency prices

Bitcoin dominance effect
Most altcoins are correlated with Bitcoin. When BTC drops 10%, most altcoins drop 10–20%. When BTC rises, capital often flows first into BTC before rotating into altcoins. Watching BTC price action provides context for the rest of the market.
Macroeconomic factors
Crypto markets have shown increasing correlation with risk assets like tech stocks. Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, inflation data, and banking sector events can all move crypto. In risk-off environments, institutional investors often reduce crypto exposure.
Project news and developments
Exchange listings, protocol upgrades, partnership announcements, and security incidents (hacks) move individual coins. The impact is usually short-lived unless it changes the fundamental value proposition.
Regulatory developments
Government actions — ETF approvals, exchange regulations, country-level bans — create significant price moves. US and EU regulatory news has the most global market impact.
Liquidity and whale activity
Large wallet movements — particularly into and out of exchanges — often precede price changes. High exchange inflows can signal selling pressure; high outflows (coins moving to cold storage) can signal long-term holding sentiment.
