Understanding today's crypto market movements

The cryptocurrency market trades continuously — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across hundreds of exchanges worldwide. Unlike equity markets that close on weekends, crypto prices reflect global demand at every moment. The data on this page updates every 60 seconds, pulling from the same 30+ exchange APIs we use to power our exchange rates.

The three columns above — gainers, losers, and highest volume — tell three different stories about what is happening in the market right now.

🚀
What top gainers signal
A coin appearing in the top gainers list has seen outsized buying pressure in the past 24 hours. This can be driven by project announcements, exchange listings, speculative momentum, or broader market rotation. High percentage gains on low-cap coins carry higher risk of reversal than gains on established assets like BTC or ETH.
📉
What top losers signal
Sharp 24-hour declines can reflect profit-taking after a recent rally, negative news about the project or its sector, broader market de-risking, or simply low liquidity amplifying normal selling pressure. A coin appearing in the losers list is not necessarily in long-term decline — context matters.
🔥
What high volume signals
Volume is the metric professional traders watch most closely. A price move accompanied by high volume tends to be more meaningful than a move on thin trading. When a coin appears in both "gainers" and "highest volume," that combination is a stronger signal than either metric alone.

What drives cryptocurrency prices

Cryptocurrency prices are determined by supply and demand on open markets — but the factors that shift demand are varied and sometimes contradictory. Understanding the main drivers helps you make sense of the data above.

Bitcoin dominance
Bitcoin accounts for roughly 50% of total crypto market cap. When Bitcoin moves significantly, most other cryptocurrencies follow — this correlation is called "Bitcoin dominance." When BTC rises and altcoins stay flat or fall, capital is moving into Bitcoin specifically. When altcoins outperform BTC, the market may be in an "altcoin season."
Macroeconomic conditions
Crypto markets have shown increasing correlation with risk-on assets like tech stocks, particularly since 2020. Interest rate decisions by the Federal Reserve, inflation data, and banking sector stress can all move crypto prices. In risk-off environments (rising rates, recession fears), institutional investors often reduce crypto exposure.
On-chain activity
For Bitcoin, metrics like hash rate, active addresses, and exchange outflows (coins moving off exchanges into private wallets — typically a bullish signal) can indicate underlying demand. High exchange inflows (coins moving onto exchanges) sometimes precede selling pressure.
Regulatory news
Announcements of exchange regulations, ETF approvals, exchange shutdowns, or government restrictions regularly move individual coins and sometimes the entire market. The US, EU, and increasingly Asia-Pacific regulatory moves are the most market-moving.
Exchange flows and liquidity
Large movements of coins between wallets — particularly into or out of centralized exchanges — can indicate anticipated buying or selling. Blockchain analytics firms track these flows in real time; large "whale" movements often precede price action.

How to read crypto market data

Market Cap
Price × circulating supply. Bitcoin's market cap dominates. Total crypto market cap is the sum of all coins — a useful indicator of overall market size and sentiment.
24h Volume
The total value of trades executed in the past 24 hours. High relative to market cap = active market. Low volume on a price move suggests thin liquidity.
24h Change %
Price change from exactly 24 hours ago. Positive = price is higher than 24h ago. Negative = lower. Intraday swings can be much larger than the 24h figure suggests.
Circulating Supply
The number of coins currently in circulation. Lower supply + growing demand = upward price pressure. Some coins have fixed max supply (Bitcoin: 21 million); others do not.
ATH / ATL
All-Time High / All-Time Low. Prices near ATH face psychological resistance. Prices near ATL may suggest either value or a dying project — context required.
Dominance %
Bitcoin dominance: BTC market cap ÷ total crypto market cap. Rising dominance = capital flowing to BTC specifically. Falling dominance = altcoins outperforming.
